Shakespeare 101

For many students, reading a Shakespearean play or poem is like piecing together a hopeless puzzle of archaic words. They wonder why students today are forced to study the writings of an English man who lived 500 years ago and wonder how they could possibly relate to stories about kings, fairies, and donkeys.

Shakespeare’s stories transcend time, and with enough background knowledge, we can learn much about ourselves and human nature through his writings. You can feel confident that our tutors have ample knowledge about the historical and personal events that influenced Shakespeare to write his literary masterpieces. Before you know it, your child will have Hamlet’s famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy memorized by heart!

Your child will learn how to:

  • examine Shakespeare’s plays, including (but not limited to) Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, The Tempest, and Richard III
  • read and interpret Early Modern English
  • distinguish the differences between the three types of Shakespearean plays: Tragedies, Comedies, and Histories
  • critically analyze the major characters, themes, symbols, and motifs in Shakespeare’s plays
  • compose a Shakespearean sonnet
  • discuss the historical, social, political, and personal impact that Shakespeare has made on us today
